Agreeing To Work Together

Have you ever noticed what God said about the people who worked on the tower of Babel?

As men moved eastward, they found a plain in Shinar and settled there. They said to each other, "Come, let's make bricks and bake them thoroughly." They used brick instead of stone, and tar for mortar. Then they said, "Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves and not be scattered over the face of the whole earth. "But the LORD came down to see the city and the tower that the men were building. The LORD said, "If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them. Genesis 11:2-6

God said, nothing they plan to do would be impossible for them. The men of Babel met and unified to make a name for themselves rather than being scattered over the land. Together they planned to build the city with bricks made of clay and mortar made from tar. Their plan was to build a city with a skyscraper that reached the heavens.

While they were building the city they became like God in that nothing became impossible for man to do. Man began to work as a cohesive unit by making plans and putting that plan to work. Man’s plan to build a city had temporarily halted God’s plan to spread man over the face of the earth. God intervened by giving each man with a different language. Without being able to communicate the people of Babel were thrown into confusion and their plan fell apart.

Example 1

In the work place those who speak the same language are of one accord. Their goals have been examined, the overall picture has been processed into steps and the work they produce has been consolidated. This creates teamwork. A created environment lowers the stress level of the job because the work has been organized and made easier. Every job is done in harmony with the next. The outcome builds a complete product every time smoothly which makes the job more productive.

Example 2

The potential of this principle can be used in your marriage. Talk things over and come to a decision of what needs to be done, agree to who does what, and then work for your goal. When two of the same mind work together there is less fighting and the goal is quickly reached. Your spouse will appreciate that you took their needs into account and are willing to make your life more enjoyable. Considering the needs of your spouse shows respect through a personal concern and demonstration of your love.

Example 3

In a City Park not to far from my home a sign reads that all dogs must be on a leash and curbed. When you are in this park and walking a dog you are required by law to place your dog on a leash. As you know dogs have a mind of their own and even on the leash want to do things their way. The leash and the dog will not always agree because when a cat in the neighborhood the dog doesn’t care what the law says. Fortunately the leash has two ends, one for you and one you thought was supposed to be attached to the dog. When the leash is secured properly you will know who is taking whom for the walk?

Your dog lives by instinct and lives to go from point A to point B before you can change your mind. Their nose guides them to food and other well selected traps you don’t want to know about. When their nose is involved with odors that could only interest a dog he will maneuver you off the beaten path. At times the leash just seems to be more trouble than it is worth. However, the leash is a means so that you may have the pleasure of obeying the law.

The leash is the instrument that ensures your compliance of the law that helps both you and the dog conform to the needs of others. One thing is certain, taking the instinct out of the dog is nearly impossible. Giving the dog no choice of being connected to a leash is your method to control the instinct of the dog you love. The dog is still capable of a wild pursuit through the mud, but he connected to a means of forcing legal control of the dog. Controlling the dog means that you have to learn how to use the leash to discipline the dog.

The length of the leash that you allow the dog to have keeps the agreement in check. Keeping the leash short keeps the dog at your side so that the dog will walk at your pace. Giving the dog a longer leash gives him more leverage and the dog will be taking you for the walk. Your kids are like your dog in some ways. Both will go to the extent of their leash to see and know what they can get away with before you reach your limits.

The park sign said, "All dogs must be curbed". The law the sign spoke of a demand every dog owner to restrain his or her dog. However, it is also possible for a dog to be leashed and not have his behavior under control. The control mechanism is only as the discipline that you choose to incorporate. The degree of discipline that the owner employs determines whether or not the dog is in control. While we may not like the law its goal is to provide safety to those who use the park system.

Conclusion

The major problem of life is that everyone else has a different agenda than you do. The purpose of being in one accord is to coexist peacefully by working a plan of action that you can agree with. Making an agreement beforehand eliminates things that slow down or stops progress. Putting any plan into force requires an agreement that both sides are willing to accomplish. In comparison the world is constantly in opposition with its members to struggle to accomplish anything. Doing thing their way when they want increases stress, arguments and failure because everyone has an agenda of their own. It is just as important to remember that when a time of peace has been established, mankind prospers.

"I tell you the truth, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven. "Again, I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything you ask for, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven. For where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them." Matt 18:18-20

Being in agreement with God is important. With God what you bind on earth will be bound in heaven when you agree with as little as two people. Binding is the mechanism that forces compliance of agreements. The mechanism used is only as the discipline you choose to incorporate in fulfilling compliance. In other words when you make agreements make every effort keep your word as you planned.
